Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. The city is located on the site of an old Indian village belonging to the Wichita Native Americans. The city boomed as a "cow town" in 1872. Oil was discovered in the area in 1915 and became the major stabilizer to the city's economy. The city is known for its flour mills, meat packing plants, grain elevators, oil refineries, railroad and its huge aircraft industry. The city serves as a large trade center for the surrounding livestock and agricultural region.
