Newark is located eight miles from New York City and is greatly impacted by its strategic location. Newark is a commercial, industrial, manufacturing and transportation center. The city is most noted for its leather, jewelry and insurance industries. Newark also produces cutlery, pharmaceuticals, beer, paint and numerous other consumer products. The city is served by Newark International Airport which is one of the busiest in the United States. Newark has a large minority population with Hispanics and African Americans making up 80 percent of the residents.
