Philadelphia has been a leading cultural and commercial city since the 18th century. The key to the city's economy is its diversified industrial base. Plastics, foods, textiles, machinery, chemical, electronics, transportation, furniture and scientific instruments are its leading manufacturers. New industries to the city include many biotechnology and healthcare firms. Installations of the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Mint are based in the city, along with the U.S. Naval Shipyard. The shipyard was closed in 1995 and has since gone commercial.
