Montgomery is an industrial city noted for its market of lumber and agricultural goods specifically dairy products and livestock. Manufacturing in the city includes commercial fertilizers, food items, automotive wiring, furniture, air conditioning and heating units. The city became known as the "Cradle of the Confederacy" for its major cotton market in the 1800s. It was in Montgomery's capital building that the Confederate States of America was formed.
