Scranton is an industrial and commercial center for the coal region of Pennsylvania. The city's economic history dates back to the late 1800s when manufacturing iron, locomotive and rail products were big business. Today, Scranton's economy is based on the service industry, manufacturing, and government. Scranton has renovated the DL&W train station to a hotel, while the rail yards are now home to the Steamtown National Historic Site. The city has seen a surge in their economy since the two story Steamtown Mall was built in 1993. Many small businesses are moving into Scranton either renovating old structures or building new ones.
