Shreveport is situated between the Texas and Arkansas lines on the Red River. Oil was discovered in Shreveport in the early 1900s which prompted the city's fast growth. Today, the city still serves as a large oil and natural gas center. Other manufacturers include cotton, lumber, metal, pharmaceuticals, telephones and pumps. Shreveport served as the Confederate capital of Louisiana during the Civil War. The city is home to two branches of Louisiana State University, the LSU Health Sciences Center and LSU Shreveport.
