Biological scientists include aquatic or marine biologists, biochemists, botanists, microbiologists, physiologists, biophysics, zoologists, wildlife biologists, and ecologists. Most master's degree and Ph.D. qualified scientists work in research and development either independently or for agencies or firms. Independent research is usually government or grant funded and can be competitive and stressful. Recent years have brought about major developments in the biotechnology industry in the study of human genes and diseases and chronic illness. These advancements have brought increased funding to pursue more research; however, the funding is expected to decline in the future, making independent researchers compete harder to fund their projects.
