Employment of sales persons in the retail industry is expected to grow as retail supervisors are usually promoted from within from employees with degrees or much previous retail experience. The sales staff are usually full-time employees or part-time sales persons who use retail jobs as temporary filler positions until they can get full-time jobs in their field of specialty. Because of the nature of the job, shift work is necessary and long hours, weekends, and even holidays must be covered by the sales staff.
