Alexandria is located on the west bank of the Potomac River and is only six miles south of Washington, D.C. The city is greatly affected by its close proximity to the capital. A majority of Alexandrians work in the United States military or in a federal civil service facility. Others may work for a private company that is contracted by the federal government to provide goods or services. The largest employer to the residents of Alexandria is the United States Department of Defense. Alexandria is also the home to many nonprofit organizations, including the Salvation Army.
