If you handle things well, an internship can be a great stepping stone to a permanent job offer. Treat your internship as if it were an extended job interview. Show them that you can add value to the company by looking for ways to help and volunteering to take on projects. Be easy to work with and make sure that you mention your interest in being hired by the company. Even if you aren't immediately getting a salary for your work, the long term payout could be great.
