Essential Functions of Position
Collaborate with area faculty in the design of instructional materials and activities to supplement composition and reading courses; collaborate with instructional areas to design materials and activities to supplement writing and reading in all college courses; evaluate the suitability of instructional material, software, and media associated with the Center; develop mechanisms to identify, diagnose, and address individual student learning difficulties; collaborate with faculty to develop intervention strategies for the retention of underprepared and at-risk students; develop strategies for enhancing student learning at all levels; serve as instructor of record in the Center and teach as assigned; supervise the day-to-day delivery of tutoring and supplemental learning activities in the Center; recruit, train and evaluate tutors; supervise student workers and classified staff as assigned; coordinate appropriate staff development activities; develop policies and procedures as a part of Center operations; establish planning priorities as they relate to the Center; ensure the preparation of comprehensive and accurate attendance reports and student usage statistics; participate in all appropriate departmental and college activities; and, work closely with outside divisions to promote the Center throughout the campus.

Minimum Qualifications
An earned Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition, or a Bachelor's in any of the above and a Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism, or, a Bachelor's degree in another discipline and a Master's in Fine Arts, Creative Writing with a minimum of 54 upper division units and graduate units in English, or a valid California Community College Credential or the equivalent education and/or experience, and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications
Demonstrated recent experience coordinating a writing and reading or tutorial center; teaching experience at multiple skill levels, preferably in a community college; experience in curriculum development; knowledge of current trends and issues related to college writing and reading; knowledge of and experience in and with Supplemental Learning Assistance; demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology; demonstrated skill in using innovative teaching methods; demonstrated knowledge of instructional assessment strategies; knowledge of the unique needs of underprepared students; knowledge and experience working with students from diverse; cultures, backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles; experience with online writing tutoring; and demonstrated evidence of effective oral and written communication skills.

Conditions of Employment
177 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits
Starting salary is $51,133 - $76,983 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,913 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including health, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance as well as disability coverage for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher's Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. Interviewees may be asked to conduct a short teaching demonstration.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions and the teaching demonstration (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President or Vice Chancellor and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
