Qualifications: Current RN license. Certification as an E.T. (Enterostomal Therapy) Nurse from an accredited E.T. Nursing Education Program. Board Certification in Enterostomal Therapy Nursing.1 2 years previous clinical nursing experience in caring for patients with abdominal somas, draining wounds, fistulas, pressure sores and incontinence. Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric and adult patient teaching principles. Extensive knowledge of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and integumentary systems including pathophysiology. Ability to utilize communication skills. Fine motor dexterity.
Duties: Provider to patients with wound, ostomy, or incontinence problems within the hospital, home health, extended care and medical office settings to provide care and on-going follow-up for these patients. Consultant to providers and staff caring for patients with wounds, ostomies, and incontinence problems by providing assessment and a plan of care that addresses specific interventions to be used. Educator to professional and ancillary staff by provision of orientation programs, inservices, seminars, and case conferences on ostomy management, wound care and incontinence management, conducts continuing educational programs for physicians and nursing personnel. This helps provide current standards of practice for ostomy patients, Patient Educator to patients and families who have, or are anticipating creation of a stoma, who have wounds or fistulae, or who have difficulties with blad. Pre counsels patients for surgery and follow up after surgery. Provides follow up and interventions to patients regarding problems concerning ostomy management, wound management and other related concerns, rather than making an appointment with their physician. Schedules patients in the outpatient department for pressure sore and incontinence management. Evaluates new and currently used products for ostomy and wound care. Authorizes patients currently being cared/followed for ostomy and wound care supplies through the ostomy benefits program. Assesses individual patient needs and goals, and provides educational programs to physicians, nursing, and other paramedical professionals on ostomy/wound care management and self care education. Conducts continuing educational programs for physicians and nursing personnel. This helps provide current standards of practice for ostomy patients. Provides patient/family teaching and education regarding ostomy/wound care and self management. Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures.
