The Neurology service of the Small Animal Medicine Section provides high quality medical care to their patients and assistance to their clients. It is an often very busy and stressful service. Common species examined are cats and dogs. In addition, this service creates a positive learning experience for TCSVM students and house staff.
The Vet Tech I will: Assist the neurologists and students. Carry out the treatment of clinical cases (outpatient & inpatient)and surgical cases (prepping, setting up, assisting & post-op medical management). Perform anesthesia on stable patients for special procedures, and perform special procedures. Perform brain auditory evoked response tests (BAER) and EEGs and present the clinician with results. Begin the examination process and record a complete and accurate patient history. Instruct veterinary students on neurology topics. Be main point of contact for the service with other hospital services and university departments. Be familiar with all the lab work, documentation, and stocking and cleanliness of all section rooms. Distribute official Tufts University documentation. Stock and clean neurology rooms.Basic Requirements: High School Diploma or the equivalent with 1-3 years of related experience. Animal handling/restraint skills with various species. Familiarity with Microsoft Office. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications: Vocational/Technical training or Associates Degree preferred. 3-5 years experience in a veterinary neurology practice and obtainment of CVT or similar certification. Ability to function as part of a team as well as independently. Be able to learn and master the BEAR and EEG software/hardware. Ability to operate Microsoft Office programs and learn the numerous hospital computer software. Care and use of all equipment. Use of patient monitoring equipment including but not limited to; blood pressure machines, Nicolet computer, ECGs, etc. Ability to learn or know where to find information for drawing lab samples and sending them to various laboratories. Patient assessment skills a plus.
