The unit manager’s primary purpose is to supervise the day-to-day nursing department activities of the health center in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility, and as directed by the Director of Nursing, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES AND AUTHORITY:
Within the limits of authorized inter-company and community policies, procedures, programs and budgets, this position has responsibility for and/or will perform the following
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Assist in supervising the day-to-day nursing services/care functions of assigned personnel, as necessary.
2. Participate in developing, maintaining and updating the written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department.
3. Assist in developing methods for the coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of residents’ care.
4. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary, and ensure that all documentation is informative and descriptive of services/care provided.
5. Assist RN Charge Nurses to ensure that all nursing personnel are following their respective job descriptions.
6. Assist the Director of Nursing in determining the staffing needs of the Nursing Department (including assisting in the recruitment and selection of staff).
7. Assist RN Charge Nurses to develop work assignments and schedule personnel to ensure that nursing care is provided to meet the daily nursing care of each resident.
8. Provides counsel and assistance to RN Charge Nurses, if requested, in conjunction with disciplinary issues and other aspects of supervision. Trains RN Charge Nurses so that they improve in their abilities to function as first-line supervisors.
9. Delegate to professional nursing personnel the administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary to perform their assigned duties.
10. Assist in the development and maintenance of written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
11. Assist RN Charge Nurses in assuring that personnel are performing assigned tasks in accordance with established nursing department procedures.
12. Assure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on premises at all times to meet the needs of the residents.
13. Assist the Quality Assurance committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies.
14. Assure that established infection control and universal precaution practices are maintained when performing nursing/resident care tasks.
15. Lead/attend departmental/staff/committee meetings in the absence of the Director as assigned.
16. Assists in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission to the facility.
17. Assure that resident rooms, treatment areas, work areas/equipment are maintained in a clean, sanitary, and safe manner.
18. Attend and direct nursing department personnel to attend in-service training and outside training programs.
19. Maintain the confidentiality/rights of all residents and their care information.
20. Assure the administrative authority, and accountability of directing the Nursing Department in the absence of the Director.
21. Willingly and consistently share opinions and observations of departmental operations with supervisor.
22. Perform other related duties that may become necessary or appropriate.
EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE (Minimum Position requirements):
· Education
1. Must possess, as a minimum, a Nursing Degree from an accredited school of nursing, college or university and hold a current, unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Ohio.
2. Must have additional education in Nursing Administration or other management courses as well as specialized training in the care of geriatric or rehabilitative patients.
3. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
· Work Experience
1. Must have, as a minimum, one (1) year experience as a supervisor in a hospital, long-term care facility, or other related health care facility.
2. Must have, as a minimum, six (6) months training experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
