Velodyne is the preferred sensor supplier for the Urban Challenge, the third in a series of autonomous vehicle competitions sponsored by DARPA to be conducted in November of 2007. We participated in the first two Grand Challenges as Team DAD but now have chosen to focus exclusively on supplying sensors to support other teams in the next competition.
In the last Grand Challenge we used a unique 64-laser spinning sensor mounted on top of our Toyota Tundra. We are shrinking that sensor to only 8” in diameter with even better resolution and accuracy. Our first production run of this new compact sensor design is sold out. We hold POs from the top teams in the last Grand Challenge, who are confident that our sensor is required to win the next event.
Our design is a unique blend of electronics and mechanical design. The entire laser/detector assembly spins, enabling point clouds of incredible density and accuracy. Electronically we are using 1 GHz+ TI C64xx DSPs, high speed ADCs (3 GHz+), high speed FIFOs, Ethernet, FPGAs, laser diode and optics technologies. We use PADS for circuit design and board layout. All programming is in assembler using TIs Code Composer IDE for assembler level programming. We use algorithms for basic signal processing through high speed ADCs, housekeeping functions, distance measurement, data output matrix rotations, point cloud analysis, and other functions. Mechanically are skilled in laser alignment, case design, high speed balancing, rotary couplers, motor controllers, material.
All the sensors are designed and built at our Morgan Hill, CA facility. The possibilities for this new sensor approach don’t end with the Grand Challenge. The market possibilities are endless.
The position is located at our Morgan Hill, CA facilities, just 20 miles south of San Jose and Silicon Valley.
