Description: Kaplan K12 is seeking a Special Populations Liaison to guide and mentor Kaplan K12 coaches and project leads with suggesting appropriate modifications in response to students with special needs during implementation of an inquiry-based high school English curriculum and a 9th grade reading curriculum.
Primary Responsibilities:
In this role, the Special Populations Liaison will have the following responsibilities: Collaborate with Kaplan K12 coaches to plan professional development in response to teacher needs, with close attention to content area literacy and students with special needs Ensure that Kaplan K12 professional learning sessions are accessible and utilized by special education teachers Facilitate professional learning sessions Support the development of the Kaplan K12 coaches instructional repertoire with regard to: Maximizing the effectiveness of the co-teaching with Special Education Teachers Identifying opportunities for modifications of instructional practices Model and co-teach with coaches; Conduct non-evaluative observations and provide supportive and constructive feedback Examine the existing curriculum in detail seeking opportunities for modifications and thereafter making appropriate modifications Ensure coaching routines address the needs of striving readers Demonstrate strong listening skills, appropriate questioning, and confidentiality. Communicate effectively with the district personnel, school administrators and colleagues at Kaplan K12. Other duties as assigned by Senior Implementation Manager and/or the National Account Manager.
The ideal candidate for the Special Populations Liaison will have a balanced combination of most, if not all of the following characteristics: Masters degree in a related field required. Ph.D or post-graduate course work in literacy or special education preferred. Secondary English certification required Three or more years of K-12 teaching experience preferably in an urban setting is required Reading Specialist Certification, grades 9-12 is preferred Special Education Endorsement, preferred Instructional coaching experience preferred Strong repertoire of successful teaching strategies, student learning processes, instructional design, and classroom management Experience in developing and facilitating professional learning sessions for special and regular education teachers in the areas of special education and/or low literacy. Ability to collaborate with educators of varying levels of proficiency to problem solve Deep understanding of the teacher change process Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills Strong presentation skills to interact effectively with diverse groups of audiences Superb computer skills, particularly in PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle numerous tasks and details simultaneously High energy level and ability to thrive in a fast paced environment A passion for learning and self-development; ability and willingness to grow quickly into an exciting and challenging role and serve as a role model for continuous professional development.
