Spacecraft System Engineer/New Business Development for Aerospace Research Facility in Laurel, MD

 

Job Description for Spacecraft System Engineer:

·        Provide space system engineering/concept development/sponsor development/and system lead for business development activities in National Security Space (military/intelligence/space control, etc.).

 

Duties:

·        Play a leading role in the development of spacecraft and space system concepts, implementation approaches, and end-to-end performance characterization in conjunction with extensive interaction with current and prospective Department of Defense (DoD) sponsors.

·        Duties may also include interaction with Civilian sponsors for the purpose of leveraging system applications and technology developments to meet DoD and civilian needs. 

·        Develop candidate concepts in an evolving requirements environment at multiple system levels, including end-to-end prototype missions, spacecraft level, payload level, and operations/data reduction.

·        Conduct preliminary analysis/trade-off studies of candidate solutions with sponsor personnel; iterate designs as warranted.

·        Provide a technical interface to sponsors and prospective sponsors.

·        Determine end-to-end system requirements.

·        Develop system concepts, block diagrams, and operational approach to meet requirements.

·        Conduct analysis/trade-off studies of design approaches, breaking down into subsystems and lower level system components and closing down system requirements accordingly.

·        Develop realistic cost and schedule estimates that match known requirements and expectations. 

·        Play a critical support role in the modeling, analysis, performance characterization/verification, and definition of end-to-end requirements and in the system-level design and development of space and near-space systems, subsystems, or payloads that meet government and/or commercial requirements.

·        Provide sponsor technical interface.

·        Contribute significantly to the management, monitoring and achievement of schedules, system budgets (weight, power, etc.)

·        Conduct these spacecraft and systems development duties in support of or leading an in-house development team or by providing support to government or commercial program offices. 

·        Prepare outside publications and internal APL reports.

·        Organize and lead system level design reviews.

·        Organize and present status reviews and other forms of reporting to keep program and line management informed. 

 

Required:

·        B.S. in engineering, physics, or closely related field or equivalent with at least 7-10 years experience carrying out the activities listed under Duties.

·        Experience with space-flight systems.

·        Very strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and to manage a large, multidisciplinary team.

·        Must be eligible for DOD clearance requiring background investigation and/or polygraph examination.

·        Must be willing to work on a long term contract basis.

·        Travel as needed.

 

 

 

Desired:

·        M.S. (or higher) in engineering, physics, or related field.

·        Current or recent clearance at the Top Secret or higher level.

·        Knowledge of military and/or intelligence sponsor community space system needs.

·        Familiarity with STK, DOORS, and/or other analysis and system management tools.
