Description: Partners HealthCare offers paid, 12- week summer internships in a variety of Information Systems departments. At Partners, the MGH/MGPO IS Management and Planning department is lead by the MGH CIO, and dually reports to the Partners Healthcare CIO as well as the senior administrative (CEO) and clinical leadership at the Mass General Hospital. The department has oversight responsibility for hospital wide IS activities and systems (wireless A/P rollout, RFID tracking system selection and implementation), as well as a number of departmental systems (i.e. Laboratory IS Systems, Physician Order Entry), etc. The team also oversees a number of hospital-specific Research & Development projects that, if successful, are transitioned to other teams for development and implementation. We are looking for a bright, hard-working student to assist with the re-design and development of MGH Admission Notification System beta project. The application provides a host of real time notification services that are significantly improving the quality and safety of care provided to MGH Patients. The application provides tools for identifying and managing various patient populations such as high-risk patients, or patients of a specific Provider Group or patients participating in a certain study and then provides a number of pathways for alerting appropriate staff (PCPs, Nurses, Case Managers, etc) when events have occurred for these patients, such as a patient arriving in the MGH Emergency Department, or getting admitted to the hospital for any reason. The application has prevented unnecessary admissions (allowing the PCP to intervene while the patient is still in the ED and not yet admitted), has facilitated emergency admissions (allowing a Case Manager to interact with a patient who was rapidly deteriorating and getting them into the hospital before a significant event occurred), and even helped comfort patients who unfortunately expired in the ED by getting a comforting/familiar face of a PCP/Case Manager into the ED with them. The application is comprised of ASP web pages, VB 6.0 middleware and a MS Access 2000 as its database. The project would be to redesign the application using new enterprise class tools such as .net, Visual Studio 2005/2008, SQL 2005 database, etc. In addition to working on this project, the intern will be allowed to participate in meetings and other projects with IS leadership, and be given exposure to executive leadership of the hospital, providing unique insight into the interaction of IS and the business of healthcare. Qualifications: Graduate student in Computer Science/MIS. Healthcare Informatics majors preferred by not required. Must be able to program in .net, Visual Basic, and/or C# Must have some exposure to MS SQL, and be able to add/create tables/columns in a SQL database. Salary/Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience Partners HealthCare offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a choice of six medical plans, two dental plans, prescription drug and vision coverage, generous Paid Time Off, disability coverage, retirement plans, flexible spending accounts, and tuition reimbursement.
