A. Finkl & Sons Co was founded in Chicago in 1879 by Anton Finkl.  Finkl has grown into one of the largest and most innovative producers of high quality steels in the world.  Finkl was purchased by Schmolz + Bickenbach in February 2007.  Schmolz is a leading provider of stainless and tool steels though out the world.  Finkl is a manufacturer and distributor of commercial, die and specialty steel forgings and it has been at its current Chicago location for over 70 years.  The customer oriented company employs about 360 people at the main plant on the north side and has distribution centers in California, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio as well as in the United Kingdom, Mexico and Thailand.  The company also has another manufacturing plant within Quebec, Canada.  Finkl is currently in the process of relocating to the south side of Chicago (93rd & Stony Island).  Finkl’s customer base includes companies in the automotive industry, tool and die industry, plastics industry and commercial manufacturers.  A. The Position

 

Tax accountant who will report to the Controller.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate’s overall responsibility will be to work as part of the accounting team with primary responsibility for book tax accounting (SFAS #109).  The Company became a C-corp tax payer in 2007.  External accountants developed the SFAS #109 framework and spreadsheets for the opening balance sheet and the current year provision. The candidate will also be responsible for some other special projects and general accounting work as necessary.   The responsibilities and duties of the position are:

 

Perform all SFAS #109 book accounting journal entries on a quarterly basis Estimate applicable tax deposits Propose ways to minimize taxes when applicable Work with external tax providers to tax compliance work and help to minimize time and dollars spent with annual tax return Responsible for all state tax reporting of specialty taxes:  real estate taxes, sales taxes, use taxes, MPC reporting within the state of Illinois Responsible for tax audits with external agencies Assist with the external audit process Streamline the accounting process where ever possible General accounting tasks, as they are assigned, to relieve some of burden of the department

 

 

 

 

The accounting department is small and consists of the following:

 

Controller

Asst Controller

AR & Credit Manager

Sr Accountant

Payroll Accountant

AP Supervisor

AP Clerk

 

This is a newly created position within the company and will be evolving as time continues

 

We use a system called Visual Manufacturing  and have a fairly sophisticated computer department.  Our offices are newly renovated and we look continuously to improve our department and the quality of our work.  Data extracts from the system are fairly easy and more detailed reports can be written over time.  The current staff ranges from 3 years of experience to 17 years.

 

Growth Potential

 

Growth potential in the department is cross-functional.  There is unlimited opportunity for cross-department growth.  The company always looks internally to fill positions.  Additional responsibilities and compensation growth will depend on how the individual develops within the department. 

 

Qualifications

 

Experience

 

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 3 years accounting experience, preferably in public accounting or with a medium to large corporation as a tax accountant.  Computer literacy is a necessity in a Windows environment, including Windows XP, Excel and Microsoft Office.  Candidates are expected to be fluent in Excel and have the ability to create, modify and manipulate data.  Knowledge of Powerpoint is a plus as is experience with report writers.

 

Education

 

Undergraduate accounting degree required.

Salary range

 

Minimum base of $65,000 plus bonus.  Willing to increase depending on experience.
