Job Summary

Description:
Manage the AstraZeneca state and local tax function to deliver timely and accurate filed state tax returns, successful resolution of state tax audits, and state tax planning ideas to minimize state and local tax liabilities while ensuring that tax affairs are conducted in accordance with tax laws and regulations.

Major Responsibilities
· Manage a team of four state tax professionals in the timely and accurate preparation and review of the state and local income and sales & use tax returns, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations.
· Effective liaison with the Tax Dept. Sr. Directors/Directors on all business and tax matters. Actively participate in departmental and self-initiated tax planning and research projects to develop the most economical state and local tax outcome. This includes routine monitoring of proposed state and local tax legislation as it affects AstraZeneca and advising on Licensing and M&A transactions.
· Manage and oversee AstraZeneca’s position during the audits of state and local tax returns to enable the auditors to understand and accept the reasons for tax positions as reflected on tax returns.
· Maintain a current awareness of new or changed state and local tax laws and regulations to assess effect on current tax accounting policies and procedures and to develop appropriate recommendations for the Senior Management of the Tax Team and the Company.
· Assist Senior Tax Managers/Directors with the calculation of the state tax liability for the US tax provision calculation on a quarterly basis and supervise staff in the monthly maintenance and reconciliation of all state tax accounts.
· Assist in the administration and development of assigned personnel including coaching mentoring and developing of senior tax analysts within the state tax function.
· Assist Senior Directors/Directors with special projects, as assigned, including providing state tax advice to the business, as well as assuming the US Tax Team business partnering liaison responsibility with Operations Finance and Fixed Assets.
· Ensure full compliance of the AstraZeneca state tax function with all corporate governance objectives including SOX 404 requirements.
· Liaising with the AstraZeneca group external auditors on all aspects of their audit work relating to state and local tax issues.

Responsibilities

· Bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting or business administration.
· Significant in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, tax accounting and state tax law acquired through increasingly responsible professional and supervisory positions.
· Superior written and verbal skills in order to brief senior management on pertinent tax issues and state tax audit matters clearly and concisely.
· Demonstrated positive interpersonal and leadership skills, with proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate a highly technical team of state tax professionals.
· Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at once and to manage completion of compliance and tax audit deadlines, as well as assigned tax planning projects, to meet targeted completion dates.
· 10 years of state tax experience in a large corporation or accounting firm.
· 5 plus years of tax planning experience with ability and desire to generate and execute state tax planning opportunities that fit within the AstraZeneca group structure.

Preferred Background
· 10 years or more of state tax technical experience with 3-5 years in Management of the state tax compliance and/or audit function. Demonstrated state tax planning experience
· An advanced degree in accounting or taxation and/or CPA certification.
