The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Development Engineer with Dow's Materials Engineering Center (MEC) located in Midland, Michigan. MEC is a leveraged R&D group within the Performance Plastics and Chemicals R&D organization and combines expertise in concept design, engineering analysis, material science, and tool design/fabrication to develop innovative application solutions for Dow’s customers and business partners. MEC Development Engineers work in concert with cross-functional teams from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, and provide a critical role in the business growth of Dow’s market facing business units. The MEC Development Engineer is capable of leading projects and efforts which utilize the global capabilities of the MEC to create value for Dow. This individual is expected to have a broad mechanical engineering knowledge base and be a subject matter expert in some facet of engineering design and/or analysis. The MEC Development Engineer will need to simultaneously handle multiple projects, so good program management skills are a must. The individual will be expected to make data based decisions, and follow sound engineering discipline. Depending on the project, the technical aspects of concept design development, structural analysis simulation, processing option assessment, plastic part processing simulation, and materials characterization will be employed to execute engineering programs. Key responsibilities include:Foster a safe work environment Integrate with external customers and R&D & sales/marketing teams within Dow to evaluate and scope project opportunities Act as team leader on some projects and team member on other projects to expand markets and applicationsProvide main application engineering interface to customersDefine capabilities and resources needed to execute the projectDevelop detailed project plans, timelines, deliverables and quality plansDevelop new technical innovations that can be leveraged to bring value to DowCost-effectively develop creative solutions to complex engineering and design problems working in conjunction with a combination of MEC designers, engineers and fabrication resources through use of materials science, design and engineering skills, and process knowledge that meet or exceed customer's expectationsBuild & utilize finite element models for complex structural components and to use finite element analysis (FEA), optimization, and statistical tools to guide the designTake conceptual designs through customer sourcing, design development, product validation, manufacturability, and launchProvide subject matter expertise in an area of engineering design and/or analysisRecognize what type of engineering material data are required to perform the engineering analyses, and be familiar with the analysis solver material models, understanding its capabilities, limitations and applicabilityPrepare & present technical papers externally, and properly document all technical learning internally (CRI’s)Proactively drive & secure intellectual property including invention disclosures, case filings, and office actionsUtilize six-sigma disciplines to structure projects and make sound engineering decisions based on data. Consistently and proactively engaged in value generating six-sigma projectsInterface with other MEC leaders and focal points to promote continuous improvement of engineering disciplines, communication, and teamworkDefine technology gaps & develop improvement roadmapsPromote quality and product stewardship inside and outside Dow A B.S., M.S. or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline is required. Minimum 10 years experience in mechanical application design/manufacturing also required with experience in leading projects through the complete product development cycle. International project leadership/teamwork skills and proficiency with scoping and developing detailed project plans, timelines, deliverables and quality plans is strongly preferred. Strong technical background in structural engineering is also required. Proven technical expertise in the area of modeling and analysis of complex structural components - plastic part design engineering preferred. Successful candidate will need to exhibit excellent communications and interpersonal skills as the position requires strong interaction in multi-functional team environment especially cross-functionally within Dow. Candidate will need to have a good working knowledge of structural engineering methods and the ability to directly or indirectly work with Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tools for structural analysis and processing simulation. CAE tools preferred include implicit (ABAQUS, NASTRAN) and explicit (ABAQUS, LS-DYNA3D, PAM-Crash) structural analysis solvers.
