The System Protection department is involved in the following areas: Project and Maintenance & Operations support, specify design, requirements and testing procedures; Review and analysis of system disturbance and operations; Technical consultation and training for System Operation and Planning issues; Regulatory compliance; Equipment evaluation, approval and standard development.
Position Summary
As a Senior Consulting Electrical Engineer in System Protection, your will provide support to the 500 kV Protection and Automation Re-Design Project and provide leadership to manage all aspects of relay assets.
Responsibilities:
Provide support to the 500 kV Protection and Automation Re-Design Project. Some of the expected functions are: Manage the consulting firms who are performing the 500 kV Re-Design effort; Manage the multi-year program to implement the 500 kV Re-Design capital work; Quality Control - Work with the technical team to ensure highest quality of work performed by both external and internal.
North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Compliance: Provide support to ensure success implementation of the NERC compliance items that are related to System Protection. Some of the expected functions are, but not limited to: Establish protocol and system to ensure that System Protection complies with all the applicable compliance items; Work with the NERC compliance lead to create and establish a consistent information system to allow NERC audit.; Prepare and manage all the documentations for audits; Represent System Protection for the audit activities, such as internal audit, Western Electricity Coordinating Counsel (WECC) audit, NERC audit.
Relay Asset Management: Provide leadership to manage all aspects of relay assets. Some of the expected functions are, but not limited to: Equipment (relay) trending; Short term emergency relay failure strategy; Long term reliability improvement strategy; Relay maintenance strategy; Short and long term relay replacement strategy.
Capital Projects: Oversee and execute all capital projects initiated by System Protection. Prepare the necessary documents, such as Advance Authorization, Project Analysis, Business Case, Economic Analysis, Scope Document, etc.
Special Projects and assignment: Lead special projects as needed. For example, root cause analysis for large outage, process improvement on our relay work procedures, update handbooks.
Qualifications
Required:
Above average in electric transmission power system knowledgeAble to create process to meet new requirementsAble to handle large and complex projects or studiesPower System Experience – System Protection, Substation, Asset Management, Operations Engineering, or Transmission PlanningSubstation Asset Management, and Relay Maintenance Strategy knowledgeBSEE is required. Prefer power system concentration
Desired:
Above average system protection engineering experience and knowledgeSix Sigma knowledgeKnowledgeable in NERC compliance requirementsSystem Protection engineering experienceProject management experience is a plusMSEE or advance degree, such as MBA, in project or operation managementProfessional Engineer - EE in state of CA
