Mascoma Corporation is a cellulosic biomass-to-ethanol company with corporate headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, and Research and Development labs in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Mascoma is leading the development of unique biotechnology and deployment of cellulosic production. Initial deployment activities are focused on strategic partnerships for conversion of wood-based cellulosic feedstocks into ethanol, at relevant commercial scale. 

Senior Biochemical Engineer

Description / Purpose:

 

As part of the Process Research and Development team, the Senior Biochemical Engineer will develop, scale-up, and commercially deploy new and improved processes and technologies related to the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic feedstocks.   The Senior Biochemical Engineer will design and oversee experiments and trials at bench, pilot, demonstration, and commercial scale in the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation process areas.  Experimental and trial results will be quantitatively analyzed and summarized in periodic reports.

 

This position will report to the Sr. Director of Bioprocess Development at Mascoma Corporation and will be based in the Boston, Massachusetts area, with routine travel to Mascoma’s research labs in Lebanon, New Hampshire, as well as several pilot, demonstration, and commercial cellulosic ethanol facilities.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

The selected individual will be responsible for a range of activities within the process development and technology transfer areas as they relate to the evaluation and subsequent commercialization of cellulosic ethanol processes and technologies.  These responsibilities will include:

 

·        Design, oversight, execution, and leadership of process development projects

·        Development of SOPs and technology transfer documents

·        Management of process development programs and project teams

·        Preparation of project plans and progress reports

·        Overseeing trials and experiments at various scales and facilities

·        Analyzing data and developing process models

·        Extensive interaction with R&D, Process Development, Engineering and Operations

·        Process engineering and start-up support

·        Professional development of junior process development staff

·        Supervision and mentoring of process development engineers and technicians

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Ph.D. in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of two years professional experience, or M.S. with a minimum of five years professional experience.

 

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess several of the following skills:

 

·        Experience/expertise in industrial fermentation process development

·        Broad knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals

·        Experience working in a pilot plant research facility

·        Understanding of ethanol or primary metabolite production via anaerobic fermentation

·        Experience developing processes utilizing yeast, bacteria, or other microbes

·        Experience with lignocellulosic biomass characterization, pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation

·        Experience with process modeling and numerical analysis software (e.g. Excel, Aspen)

·        Ability to work well in a collaborative environment with minimal supervision

·        Ability to analyze complex scientific problems and develop creative technical solutions

·        Ability to transfer knowledge from theoretical principles to applied situations

·        Ability to led multidisciplinary teams

·        Experience managing successful projects

·        Excellent oral and written communication skills

·        Experience supervising technicians and operators

·        Ability to contribute to engineering design and implementation of new equipment

·        Experience interacting with equipment vendors

·        Experience with Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, and instrumentation and control
