Position Purpose:

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District is seeking a licensed and experienced senior architect to provide leadership in sustainable design for our residential and commercial new construction division. The position is based in Sacramento, California. Applicants must be a licensed architect in the State of California.

Salary Range: $92,532 - $115,536 Annually

Essential Functions:

The senior architect will provide expertise and guidance to architects and building developers, as well as senior level managers and employees, regarding current building design, future code upgrades, sustainable products, LEED certification (along with other green building rating systems), “green- best practices, Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) standards, California Title 24 building energy efficiency standards, energy performance, on-site renewable energy applications, and other construction /code issues. A key role for the qualified individual will be the continuance of the leadership role SMUD has created in sustainable building and residential design. SMUD is looking to expand its legacy as the first point of contact when developers/architects begin the conceptual design process for new construction.

The senior architect is expected to promote SMUD’s energy efficiency programs to customers, professional societies and trade organizations.

The senior architect may also work with building officials, fire marshals, and other government agents to develop policy guidelines for building sustainability. This position will also provide appropriate approval and review of plans and calculations as well as potential architectural support to overcome any local or state objections.


Minimum Qualifications:

The qualified candidate will: Apply excellent interpersonal skills both in one-on-one situations with all levels of personnel, and in larger group meetings; handle multiple tasks with the ability to switch priorities and focus as needed; and collaborate effectively with and influence peers and other leaders in making business decisions.

The qualified candidate will be expected to teach classes on sustainable design both on and off-site.

The senior level architect must be able to: manage projects cradle to grave, solve complex problems and situations, and possess the ability to present solutions and ideas at the most senior levels in organizations. Exercises excellent judgment and possesses a keen attention to detail while demonstrating initiative, creativity and innovation. Documents and communicates status, issues and risks in a timely manner to stakeholders and senior management.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) or more years of proven architectural/building design skills and experience with a thorough knowledge of new building construction along with extensive experience in sustainable and energy efficiency design strategies for commercial and residential applications.

EDUCATION: BS degree from an accredited college or university majoring in Architecture, Planning, or Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.



Licenses/Certifications:

Licensed as an architect with the State of California is required.



Desirable Qualifications:

LEED® AP Certification and experience with building and energy simulation software is desired
