JOB TITLE: SECURITY & TRANSPORTATION OFFICER
DEPARTMENT: ALLEN COUNTY COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS
HOURS: UP TO 30 HOURS/WEEK – SHIFT TIMES WILL VARY
SALARY: $14.00 PER HOUR

This position is part- time, non-exempt, unclassified, and not covered by the Allen County Employee Handbook.
DUTIES:
Acts as the first responder to any threat or danger to staff, offenders, visitors, or the building. Visually inspects all persons entering the building noting any suspicious behavior or activity and responds immediately to remove from the premises anyone who possesses a danger to offenders or visitors.Conducts searches of all offenders and visitors passing through the security check point who will have personal contact with a staff member, through the use of metal detectors, hand wands and hands on searches as required, ensuring the person does not have weapons, contraband, and other illegal or items prohibited at or by Allen County Community Corrections.· Supervises a work crew of up to 15 high risk felony and misdemeanor offenders at any one time; remains with work crew at all times to monitor offender’s work and behavior; maintains security at work-sites ensuring public safety and immediately addresses any threat or danger to staff, offenders, or the public; enforces rules of the program with all offenders under crew supervision. Enforces all rules and regulations of the community corrections building and program as it relates to offender / staff safety and rules governing offender conduct and determines and distributes sanctions as warranted. De-escalates sensitive situations that arise in transit or at sites involving offenders or contracted agencies to ensure the utmost professional behavior and work is being presented and responds immediately to remedy the incident.Monitors the building through the use of video surveillance and hourly inspections of the building to ensure staff safety and offender compliance to building and program rules.Transports offenders and or equipment to and from approved sites daily which at times requires the proper installation and use of a trailer attached to the transporting van. Ensures safe driving protocol and maintains all vehicles and equipment for cleanliness and service. Maintains frequent contact with Communications giving exact locations on arrival and departure at sites.Prepares detailed written reports of incidents, altercations, or observations of obstacles that may affect the daily operations of security or the community service program to the Section Chief and Coordinator. Administers portable breath tests to offenders when there is reason to believe the offender is intoxicated and secures urine screens from offenders as requested or needed.Maintains the building and grounds to ensure that areas in and around the building are clean and professional in appearance.Provides demonstration to work crew of work assignments; assists work crews with completion of work assignments as necessary.Monitors and reports any violations of drug/alcohol usage or other inappropriate behavior of offenders and monitors clothing and safety standards of offenders.Documents and verifies offenders that are present for Community Service, the type of community service hours that the offender is to complete, and the actual number of hours approved based on performance while on the crew.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· High school diploma with prior military / law enforcement experience or prior experience acting as an authority to criminal offenders required.
· Ability to attend and complete defensive tactics training including pepper spray.
· Complete knowledge of standard policies and practices of Allen County Legal process, with ability to effectively apply and enforce applicable policies and procedures, complete required case reports.
· Ability to effectively supervise a work crew, including distributing work assignments, providing instructions, evaluating performance, and providing corrective discipline.
· Ability to effectively work and communicate (orally and in writing) with professional an non-professional co-workers, officials form various governmental and social service agencies; contracting agency or work-site, program offenders and their families, and members of the general public.
· Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations and take authoritative action applying appropriate discretion and common sense.
· Knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, procedures and limitations; ability to properly operate and maintain all assigned vehicles, equipment and supplies.
· Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of all Department records and information.
· Ability to legally operate motor vehicles; ability to physically perform various work assignments, such as ground keeping, and set-up and tear down operations for sporting and entertainment vents.
· Must possess a valid driver’s license.
