Two Semester Authentic Teacher Certification Program Two Million Dollar Federally Funded Grant The Houston Transition to Teaching Program promotes innovation in teacher recruitment, selection, preparation, placement, and retention so that high-need schools in high-need districts are staffed with Secondary Math and Science teachers that are highly qualified, willing, and committed to serve the targeted student population. 

*Candidates are those with an earned Bachelor’s degree in a Science/Math field

 

*Candidates are those planning to retire or desiring a career change to teaching

 

*Candidates earn credit towards UH Master’s degree

 

*All candidates receive a $5,000 tuition scholarship

 

*Accelerated one year program with authentic classroom experiences and thorough preparation

 

*Places candidates with practical experiences using Science and Math in those high need subject areas across the Houston area 

 

*Candidates will be teaching Secondary Math/Science in one of our partnered school districts high needs campuses; HISD, Alief ISD, Galena Park ISD, Pasadena ISD, or Spring Branch ISD

 

***Specific Requirements***

 

1. One must have an earned Bachelor's degree in a Science or Math field

2. Upon successful completion of the one year training internship, one is guaranteed a job in a high-needs school in one of our five partner districts in the Houston area.

3. The $5,000 tuition scholarship covers nearly 100% of the entire program, including between 12-18 Master's degree credit hours in Education. In order to keep this $5,000 and not have to pay it back, a candidate must remain a teacher in one of our partner districts for three years.

4. One must successfully earn a credible score on the Texas teacher's examination qualifier test before acceptance.

5. One must pass a pre screen interview, background check, formal interview, and writing sample before acceptance.

6. To be successful in this program, one must demonstrate a genuine desire to be an effective secondary teacher throughout the acceptance process, as well as the internship itself.

7. The two semester internship requires Master's level course work as well as a minimum of 450 hours of classroom observation and teaching throughout the internship year.
