SUMMARY:  Fulfill the needs for mathematical, statistical, programming, electronics, and geospatial research.  Combine analytical skills with projects needing a variety of GIS, circuitry, and code-writing opportunities.  The position is based at Michigan Tech Research Institute in Ann Arbor, MI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research relating to applying technological skills to solving governmental and societal needs.

Provide technical assistance for projects needing analytical skills including programming, mathematics, and statistics.

Provide designing, implementation, programming, and testing of electronic circuitry and hardware/software interfaces for in-situ data collection systems.

Provide software development for on-line and desktop GIS Decision Support Systems using ESRI ArcGIS Server and other geospatial tools.

Contribute technical expertise to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports.

Present results to sponsor as appropriate.

Participate in proposal writing.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision will be exercised over student interns.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED:

Master’s degree in GIS, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or statistics and 2 years of experience.

 

OR

 

Bachelor’s degree in GIS, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or statistics and 5 years of experience.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

REQUIRED:

Demonstrated ability to obtain a DoD security clearance, which requires United States citizenship.

Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills.

Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis of data using one or more major statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS or R.

Demonstrated ability to mathematically model data using MATLAB.

Demonstrated ability with programming, designing, and implementing electronic circuitry for hardware and software interfaces applicable to in situ data collection.

Demonstrated experience with one or more object oriented programming languages (VB, VB.NET, C++, C#).

Demonstrated experience in using ArcGIS for geospatial analysis.

Demonstrated knowledge of common GIS and remote sensing data formats and how to apply them.

Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.

 

DESIRABLE:

Demonstrated experience in .NET web development, preferably for ESRI web mapping applications.

Demonstrated experience in creating HTML/Javascript websites.

Demonstrated experience with XML data formats and related technologies.

Experience developing ArcGIS Server applications (experience with ArcIMS development will also be considered).

Experience in developing stand-alone GIS applications.

Experience in customizing desktop ArcGIS for focused-user applications.

Experience in writing and applying KML.

AJAX programming experience.

Previous participation in proposal writing.

Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly at meetings and symposia.
