DESCRIPTION OF WORK:  The NC Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission, a permanent state commission, seeks a qualified individual to fill its Research and Policy Associate position.  Duties:  Assist the Commission in the formulation of sentencing laws and policies by researching issues, presenting information, and facilitating discussions.  Assist in the preparation of annual statistical reports, criminal justice and juvenile justice population projections, and biennial recidivism studies; estimate the resource impact of proposed criminal and juvenile justice legislation; assist with the development and maintenance of statistical data relating to sentencing and corrections; and provide staff support to the 30-member Commission.  Responsibilities for various research projects includes determining methodological approaches, data management, statistical analysis, report writing, and oral presentation of findings.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Master's degree in the social sciences, statistics, or other research-related field with at least one year of relevant experience in governmental or applied social science research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  High level of computer expertise, including data management and analysis experience with SAS or other data management/statistical analysis software; experience working with large data sets, generating statistical reports, and summarizing research findings.  Familiarity and experience with the North Carolina criminal and/or juvenile justice systems is preferred.
