A challenging opportunity exists for a Research and Development Engineer at the headquarters of H.C. Starck Inc. in our Newton, Massachusetts plant. The R&D Engineer plans and performs experiments to develop new refractory metal products and improve existing products that may be manufactured at any FP site.
Principle Activities/Duties:
· Plan, manage and conduct projects designed to develop new or improve existing refractory metal products.
· Learn the operation of and take responsibility for laboratory equipment, including vacuum hot press, hot isostatic press, rolling mill and ancillary equipment.
· Train and supervise technicians in the operation of lab equipment on an as-needed basis.
· Monitor the technical literature on subjects pertinent to the manufacturing of refractory metal products.
· Work with customers on joint development projects and solve problems associated with HCST products.
· Assist with the transfer of new processes to production.
· Use and advocate safe working procedures.
Know How:
· B.S. in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 0-3 years experience in a laboratory or industrial setting.
· Knowledge of powder metallurgy processes, physical metallurgy and manufacturing principles.
· Aptitude and desire for learning about, or knowledge of, P/M processing equipment.
· Ability to work as part of a team with other R&D staff and technicians, sales and marketing staff.
· Demonstrate initiative, creativity, the desire to learn for professional growth, and have excellent communication skills.
