We are currently looking for a Perianesthesia Registered Nurse

The Perianesthesia RN has primary responsibility and accountability for nursing care of the patient having surgical intervention and/or treatment preoperatively and postoperatively.

Key Responsibilities

1. Preoperatively, the nurse prepares patients physically and emotionally for their surgical and/or treatment experience

2. Phase I postoperatively the RN supports transition from a totally anesthetized state to one requiring less acute interventions. Competence in post anesthesia nursing as well as the ability to handle respiratory and cardiac emergencies is essential.

3. Phase II postoperatively, strong assessment, communication and teaching skills are required

4. Other primary responsibilities/essential functions include:

· Admission of adult and pediatric patients for surgeries and procedure including assessment of physical status and ability to determine ASA class

· Interviewing, assessing and teaching patients throughout the continuum of preop phone contact, discharge preparation and postop calls

· Recovery of Phase I PACU patients with knowledge of airway management, anesthetic drugs, pain and nausea control. Strong physical assessment and emergency management skills are essential.

· Recovery of Phase II PACU patients including preparation of patient and caregiver for discharge home

· Assists with upper and lower endoscopy procedures

· Assists with pain clinic procedures

· Accurate documentation of nursing care given

· Competent to perform and maintain standards as outlined in ECSC policies and procedures and competency skills checklist

· Contributes as an active team member in the daily operation of the Surgery Center

· Advocates quality improvement at ECSC through team work; follows QI program and completes QRRs appropriately

· Maintains equipment and instrumentation in working order and supplies to meet the needs of the surgery schedule

· Practices universal precautions

· Maintains annual safety training requirements

· Where applicable, accepts preceptor duties and performance appraisal of peers and students

· Where applicable, participates in new product, equipment and/or supplies evaluation

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of a qualified nursing school program; A.D.N./B.S.N. program preferred. Current California RN license, current BLS certification; ACLS required within six months of hire. Minimum of one year recent experience in acute care setting. Prior outpatient surgery center experience preferred.

· Operational knowledge for safe use of equipment, instruments and supplies

· Accurate technical skills when performing nursing procedures

· Uses established protocols and theoretical knowledge in emergency situations

· Strong emergency management skills including use of ACLS and BLS protocol

· Strong physical assessment and airway management skills

· Excellent documentation skills

· Knowledge of IV Conscious Sedation

· IV therapy skills

· Fulfills a patient care management role using nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation in individualizing patient care

· Excellent customer service skills

· Flexible and can deal with many interruptions

· Attention to detail and multi-task oriented, able to work under pressure

· Act in a professional manner

· Maintains confidentiality

· Able to work effectively with staff members, team leaders, managers and medical staff members

· Able to problem solve and assist individuals and groups in problem solving tasks
