The men and women of the Purchasing and Supply community provide the organization and availability of materials and resources to their fellow Sailors to help each mission run successfully and safely. If you are responsible, possess good math skills and a mind for tracking and ordering mission-critical materials and equipment, this could be the career field for you.

What Will You Do?
Your job is to ensure that materials and equipment needed by your ship, squadron, submarine or unit are available and in good order. You might find yourself inspecting and organizing a destroyer's postal center or ship's store to maximize productivity and the delivery of letters or supplies. Or maybe you'll evaluate different bids and proposals for flight equipment to outfit your squadron's pilots and aircrew personnel. Some of your other daily duties might be to: Keep fiscal records of a facilityOrder, store, check and issue naval aircraft and aeronautical equipment and accessories, including flight gearPrepare inventory reports and correspondenceKeep official publications up-to-dateMaintain financial logs and recordsOperate computer systems that provide logistic support information for submarine supplies and accounting functionsOrganize and operate Navy post offices, ashore and afloatInspect Navy post offices and take steps to maintain or improve efficiency

Educational Opportunities
Much of the training you'll receive in the Purchasing and Supply field can be counted toward semester credit hours for a bachelor's or associate's degree. You might also have the opportunity for continued education through various college programs and/or tuition assistance.

Skills and Training
Through on-the-job training and formal Navy schooling, you might learn postal procedures needed to run the post office on your ship, submarine or at a land-based facility. Or you may learn the accounting principles needed to maintain a million-dollar government budget. Through your training in the Purchase and Supply field, you might earn these Department of Labor certifications: Stock Control SupervisorCargo AgentBudget Accountant

Also, your training might prepare you for future careers such as: Retail Store Manager BookkeeperAccounting ClerkStock/Shipping ClerkPost Office Clerk

Advanced technical and operational training is available in this rating during later stages of career development.
