State Public Defender

State of Iowa

The Governor of the State of Iowa is seeking candidates for the position of State Public Defender. The State Public Defender's Office coordinates legal representation to indigent clients who are accused of committing crimes or involved in juvenile court matters.

The State Public Defender's Office supervises a Trial Division of 18 field offices, an Appellant Defender Office that handles indigent defense cases on appeal for the entire state, and a Civil Commitment Unit. In addition, the State Public Defender administers an assigned counsel and organizational contract program, which includes fee claim review and approval. The Office also provides legal advice to inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary in civil cases. This position is responsible for directing and supervising all administrative and legal activities of the State Public Defender's Office. The position is located in Des Moines, Iowa, and requires some travel.

The State Public Defender is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Governor, subject to confirmation by the Iowa State Senate upon initial appointment and at least every four years thereafter. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Iowa. Additionally, a background in long-term strategic thinking, data driven decision-making, organizational leadership, integration of technology in the delivery of services, forming strategic alliances, finance, and solid communications skills are necessary.

Preferred Qualifications: Ten years experience providing legal services to the indigent and at least five years of management responsibility.

Salary Range:

$71,115 to $108,805
