The Position:

The Highly effective and reliable particulate controls are essential to high plant availability.  Plant derates, which are costly, are often the only way to prevent opacity violations with today’s equipment. Increasingly stringent particulate/ opacity limits are placing greater demands on the particulate controls, while, at the same time power generators are adding solids into the flue gas to capture gaseous pollutants.  All these factors combine to create a need for cost-effective particulate control upgrades, ultra-low emitting systems for new plants, and robust systems for all news.


Job Function:

Be or become a national expert in particulate controlsAssist members with difficult particulate control problems – those not solved by consultants – based on exposure to the full array of existing equipment and past issues, newly emerging technologies, EPRI’s ESP performance prediction model, and a wide network of specialists in power generation companies, OEMs, consultants, aftermarket suppliers, etc.Develop and implement a particulate control RD&D strategy to help members maintain their existing fleet, prefer for new requirements, and meet very stringent emission limits for any new plants or those that may eventually be retrofit with CO2 controlsManage ongoing projects to evaluate new technologies and address new issues (e.g., impacts on particulate emissions due to increased unburned carbon, injected activated carbon, or injected alkali for SO2/SO3 control.  This includes work scope development, contractor selection, ongoing review and re-direction, as needed, of technical results, and oversight/direction on budget and schedule

Education Level and Years of Experience:

Bachelors of Science, Engineering or Physics; advanced technology degree preferred 7 years minimum experience in operating and troubleshooting particulate controls; 10 yr experience operating/troubleshooting particulate controls, including > 2 yr managing others; involvement in RD&D; and experience representing the organization to the outside, preferably even to regulators/permit writers.
