Our 200-bed inpatient mental health facility consists of eight 25-bed units. Two of these units are dedicated to the treatment of psychiatric patients with comorbid medical conditions, one is devoted to the management of “Rule 20” treat to competency patients; three units specializing in the treatment of high acuity behavioral disorders. The remaining two units are general psychiatric units. Our average length of stay is about 100 days.
The mental health system in Minnesota is currently undergoing a radical transformation. All of the state hospitals except AMRTC are being replaced by community based, 16 bed “community behavioral health hospitals”. AMRTC houses a centralized pre- admissions office for the new statewide system, and is poised to develop consultative televideo support of the 16 bed programs as they open. In addition, AMRTC is the site of an innovative program involving the hospital and several minnesota counties, that allows collaborative case management between the county and the hospital to occur very early in the course of the patient’s hospitalization.
