Job Description: Power Plant Operator – Renewable Energy/Electrical Energy Generation
Responsible for renewable fuels power plant operations including plant startups, casualty and repair operations. Position will be important part of testing, startup and ongoing operations of an under-construction renewable fuels co-generation facility located in Shakopee, MN. This person will report to the General Manager of KODA Energy LLC . This position involves rotating shifts with varying schedules.
Job Requirements
Minimum Requirements
· 2 year associates degree from college or technical school or equivalent
· 2 or more years related experience and training in equivalent employment position
· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals and to understand and carry out instructions, written or oral, as furnished.
· Ability to write routine reports and record information in logs
· Ability conduct basic mathematical analysis including consumption rates, proportions and percentages
· Class “A” Boiler operator license (State of Minnesota)
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Ability to solve problems and think critically
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
· Experience with a variety of logistics, operations, boiler, and/or turbine generator operating and information systems
· Power plant experience
· Biomass power plant experience
· Chief class “A” Boiler Operator license (State of Minnesota)
Responsibilities Include:
Summary: Operates automatically fired boilers and turbine generators to generate steam that supplies heat or power for buildings or industrial processes
· Operates and maintains stationary engines and mechanical equipment such as steam engines, air compressors, turbines, generators, motors and stream boilers
· Reads meters and gauges or automated recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions
· Records data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analyses of flue gases, voltage load and generator balance
· Adjusts manual controls or override automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems or shutdown equipment
· Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication
· Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges and cleaning and replacing burners or other components
· Coordinate and work with outside contractors to perform necessary repairs or maintenance
· Monitor and record renewable fuel inventories and fuel deliveries
· Monitor, record and verify proper fuel material mixtures including moisture content; make recommendations for optimized fuel usage
· Performs water titration tests and pours chemical additives into treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and to clean boiler lines
· Record operations and maintenance actions taken during shift in operators log
· Communicate concerns, issues and actions taken to supervisors and to operators for oncoming shift
· Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization policies and applicable laws
· Other duties as may be assigned

About the Company:
KODA Energy LLC is an innovative combined heat and power plant which will generate electricity and heat utilizing agricultural by-products and grown energy crops. Considerably cleaner than a coal plant and with lower carbon emissions than fossil fuel plants, KODA is at the forefront of renewable energy within Minnesota as well as globally. It will provide and sell heat to Rahr Malting, replacing natural gas, as well as sell electricity to Rahr and others. Electric power generation shall average 16.5MW net. It is a $55 million construction project that will spend over $6 million per year in local biomass purchases. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) and Rahr are the investing partners. The company gets its name from the word “friend” in the Dakota language. The plant is projected to be fully operational in December 2008.
