Job Description:
The Polymer Engineer will be working in a product support role across the entire Lexmark product line, working with both development and production groups. He or she will be involved with all aspects of using polymer materials at Lexmark, including material selection, failure analysis, quality assurance, plastic processing, new material testing and qualification, chemical compatibility testing, environmental compliance, and assist with supply chain and cost reduction efforts.
Job Duties:
The polymer engineer will support inkjet and laser printer groups, in both development and production. The engineer will be expected to interface with the design team to help them choose proper polymer materials for their parts, and ensure proper drawing notes are used. He or she will also assist in failure analysis and quality assurance support as requested by the design or production.
Ideally, the engineer should be familiar with injection molding, and how processing steps, tooling design, and material choice can affect the overall part dimensions and quality. The engineer will run test equipment in the materials lab, and assist in the development of new test methods as needed.
The engineer will need to interface with the analytical team to get analysis done in support of the failure analysis and quality assurance work. They will also need to work with the CAD/CAM groups, and be familiar with mold flow and FEA analysis, and their appropriate use.
The engineer will also be expected to keep in regular contact with our material supplier representatives, to learn about new grades, to order samples and test grades as needed, and to have an understanding of the supply chain and cost of the resins.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or equivalent
- Fundamental knowledge of polymers
- Ability to understand domestic and international materials standards
- Knowledge of materials testing methods and equipment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Be proficient in the use of MS Office software, particularly Excel
- Have a positive attitude in a customer support role
