 The Medical College of Wisconsin, Division of Pediatric Surgery, is seeking a Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner to provide professional healthcare to patients as directed by a licensed physician and in accordance with policies and procedures.

 

Essential duties include:

 

1.  Evaluate patients and render care, within the scope of practice outlined by state statute, in the inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic lab setting.

2. Teach, counsel and assist patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventative behaviors.

3.  Evaluate and modify healthcare plan as related to patient compliance and outcomes, under the supervision of a physician.

4. Write admission, discharge, transfer, medication and other orders as required for the management of patient care, as directed by a physician.

5. Order, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicate and document information.

6. Perform examination of patients, and obtain/document information regarding patient history.

7. Maintain detailed, legible and confidential medical records in accordance with established protocol.

8. Acquire information on the most current developments and trends in the Physician Assistant field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associations and literature.

9. Participate in quality assurance activities and/or clinical trials.

 

Minimum Position Qualifications

Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

 

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner or Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree with successful graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program           

 

Experience: No experience required. 

 

Nurse Practitioners: previous specialized experience in general surgery and related aspects of patient care preferred.  Experience in developing and implementing surgical procedures based on critical pathway desired.  Previous Critical or Trauma Care experience preferred.

 

Certifications/Licenses:   

 

Nurse Practitioners: NP, RN, Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) – or working towards certification within 3 months of graduation from an accredited program or before hire date.  Acute Care Licensed to practice as an RN in the state of Wisconsin.  Successful completion of the APNP exam within 180 days from start date.

 

Physician Assistants: NCCPA certification or eligibility for certification; Physician Assistant licensed by the State of Wisconsin; ACLS and CPR certification required.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing clearly and logically. Ability to analyze information and solve problems. Demonstrates accuracy and an attention to detail. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences clearly and concisely orally. Ability to maintain confidences.
