Hewlett-Packard Company is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to affirmative action and work force diversity.  Hewlett-Packard Company has an opening for a patent attorney supporting its Imaging and Printing Group.  This opening represents an exciting, once in a lifetime opportunity for the right candidate to work with a dynamic team of professionals in a world-class company.  This unique position could be based in Corvallis, Oregon, Vancouver, Washington, San Diego, California, or Boise, Idaho.  About the Job This position is  in the Patent Development group of the HP Legal Department, where the successful candidate will be responsible for procuring strategic, high quality patents protecting HP’s highly successful imaging and printing business, and managing a specific technology-based  portion of the imaging and printing patent portfolio.   A significant aspect of this position involves assigning patent preparation and prosecution matters to a group of outside counsel and supervising their work product to assure it meets HP’s standards of quality, timeliness and cost.  The successful candidate will also play a major role in HP’s invention disclosure review process to help assure that HP’s best inventions are selected for patenting in this technical area.  She or he will also become the expert in the Legal Department for that portion of the patent portfolio, and provide assistance to others in handling licensing, litigation, and dispute matters. The successful candidate will also work to encourage the submission of forward looking, gap-filling invention disclosures, and personally prepare and prosecute patent applications.   The title of the position is Patent Agent or Patent Counsel.  Travel is expected to be less than 5% of the time.  While any travel is dependent on business needs and is difficult to predict in advance, it is expected that the successful candidate would take between 0-2 short trips per year, most typically to other HP locations in California, Oregon, or Washington State.   About the Candidate The successful candidate is expected to have the following attributes: ·         A BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Chemical Engineering (required) ·         USPTO registration (required)  ·         0-5+ years experience as a patent agent or attorney·         Strong academic credentials·         Experience in a large corporate environment, as an attorney, agent or engineer·         Demonstrated ability to work with clients in a team-oriented partnership to help them arrive at elegant solutions to their problems·         Demonstrated flexibility to accept new and different challenges in a fast paced, high tech environment·         Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, assertively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing·         A positive attitude·         A creative spirit A JD Degree and registration with state bar is not required, but is preferred.
