The key principle of this job is to support the mission of Abilene Christian University in educating students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world.

Scope: This position is responsible to the Medical Director for providing health care, health education, maintaining accurate record of patient care and all other functions that relate to health care.

I. Basic Responsibilities

A. Provide health care services for students and their dependents.

B. Screen and evaluate patients recommending appropriate health care measures.

C. Maintain complete and accurate health record information as it pertains to the services directly and indirectly provided to the patient.

D. Provide teaching in health related areas to students and their dependents.

E. Participate as an active part of the Counseling and Medical Clinic Team, as well as, the Student Life Team.

II. Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

A. Provide Health Care

1. Assist the Medical Director in providing patient care to students and their dependents.

2. Administer allergy injections, flu vaccines, TB skin tests and other immunizations to patients.

3. Administer first aid to patients in emergency situations.

4. Clean rooms, equipment and linens for procedures and exam rooms.

B. Triage and Evaluate Patients

1. Perform physical assessments on each patient and evaluate current health status.

2. Refer to the Medical Director, nurse practitioner, other appropriate physician or outside agency.

3. Instruct patients about health care and ways to prevent and/or handle problems.

C. Maintain Records

1. Maintain accurate electronic medical records, recording patient data in a complete and efficient manner.

2. Assist with all correspondence to students and families.

3. Assist in the tracking and maintenance of paperwork for those patients enrolled in Patient Assistance Programs.

D. Provide teaching

1. Provide instruction to patients during each office visit, dorm visits, wellness week, Passport sessions and any other scheduled events.

2. Participate in workshops and seminars each semester.

3. Speak to various groups or classes as requested.

E. Participate in Team Activities

1. Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings, monthly Departmental Counseling and Medical Clinic Meetings, as well as, monthly Student Life meetings.

2. Interact with and participate in the care of counseling clients when asked.

3. Be willing to do various jobs when asked; maintain a good knowledge of the operations of the Medical Clinic Office.

A. Skills Required

1. Good interpersonal relationship and communication skills.

2. Knowledge and experience in the nursing profession

3. Organizational skills and ability to follow through with tasks accurately.

4. Ability to multi-task and work in a quick paced environment.

B. Training Modules Required

1. Various health care meeting, college health meetings and continuing education opportunities.

2. Banner Training to effectively be able to search for client information as it pertains to the Medical Clinic; this includes but is not limited to the entering of Health Record Forms for all incoming students.

3. Professional organization conferences and workshops such as American College Health Association.

IV. Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform this job.

A. Professional

1. Diploma/Degree in nursing with a current Texas Registered Nursing License.

2. Experience in providing health care, assisting and treating.

3. Experience and education with health related topics.

B. Personal

1. Self motivated and organized.

2. Strong interpersonal skills; good communication skills especially relating to patients about health issues.

3. Competence and ability to relate to and interact with all levels of students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families with a true interest in the college student.

V. Physical Demands: These are physical demands that are regularly required to perform this job.

A. Able to endure long periods of walking, standing or moving about from exam room to exam room.

B. Able to lift, move and stabilize patients and equipment.

C. Strong voice endurance for explanations to patients, parents, etc.

D. Mental endurance and ability to accomplish the completion of large volumes of paperwork at various times each semester.
