Del Monte Foods is one of the country's largest and most well known producers, distributors and marketers of premium quality, branded food and pet products for the U.S. retail market. Operations Safety Manager
Job Description:
This position will provide support to the Del Monte Foods Operations Line Management and assist with all applicable safety regulations and facilitate reduction of injuries within the company. This position will focus on improving operations’ safety performance with a focus toward company-wide safety programs, issues, and will provide guidance with a global focus. This position will insure that operations’ safety programs are managed by effective leaders, and that those leaders are given the proper tools and guidance to produce the desired results.
This position will interact with plan managers, human resources managers, plant safety coordinators and corporate legal. In addition, the position will interact with enforcement officials as encountered through compliance visits and / or during the research of specific safety issues.
1. Work with operations management (plant managers, human resources managers, and plant safety coordinators to increase safety performance and define safety support needs. Ensure that action plans, including corrective actions are in place to reduce facilities incidence rates and that established goals are attained. Perform Safety Manager function at the facility to which they are assigned and coordinate safety programs at facilities within their Business Unit.
2. Assist the Director of Safety & Security in developing long-range plans for the company safety function, primarily at the operations / plant level, and in such other administrative functions as needed / requested. Work on an ongoing basis with HR, Lean Manufacturing, Security, Operations management, and Risk Management, and the Legal Dept. to ensure compliance with all state, federal, and corporate safety policies / programs.
3. Develop and implement special emphasis programs to improve company safety performance. Promote safe work practices at all facilities within the Business Unit and support the consistent application of the Del Monte Safety Program. Ensure that required written safety programs are in place at all facilities and that programs are reviewed on at least an annual basis to ensure compliance with established regulations. Complete an annual audit of all written programs.
4. Maintain company reporting mechanisms for injuries, workers’ compensation, serious incidents, etc. Ensure that accurate records (OSHA Logs) are maintained at facilities within their Business Unit. Review facility OI & I reports and ensure that reports are submitted in a timely manner and that data reported is accurate.
5. Identify education needs to plant safety coordinators. Plan and conduct regular operations safety conferences. Ensure that routine safety audits are conducted at facilities and issues identified are abated. Review facility return to work policies and work with local health care providers to establish on-site visits to assist health care providers in obtaining a better understanding of the workplace.
6. Perform all tasks of Operations Safety Manager, as necessary.
CUSTOMERS: Positions with whom this job relates to / services on a regular basis.
INTERNAL: The manager will work closely with facility health and safety, engineering, HR, Lean Manufacturing, Security, and facility management. The manager will also have a close working relationship with members of the corporate health and safety , Risk Management, Legal Dept., engineering and operations staffs.
EXTERNAL: The manager may be required to represent Del Monte in dealings with various state and federal government agencies. The manager may also serve as a Del Monte representative to different trade organizations. Additionally, the manager will be required to work with health and safety contractors / vendors on a regular basis.
Job Requirements:
Education: BS in Occupational Safety and Health or related field, or six years of industry related safety experience in lieu of degree as described below
Achievement of professional certification in health and safety, or plans to obtain same highly desirable.
Years of Experience: Six (6) years of progressive health and safety experience to include but not limited to:
1. Extensive knowledge of safety, industrial hygiene and OSHA regulations, and experience in developing, implementing, and performing detailed facility health & safety audits.
2. Familiarity with safety management theory, human factors requirements, fire protection, OSHA and record keeping requirements, and health and safety performance measures.
3. Developing, preparing and presenting health & safety training programs to management and hourly employees.
4. In-plant experience in the management of health & safety programs, and
5. Facilitation skills including, managing or directing safety committees, team building, objective setting, problem resolution and tracking results.
