This position will lead the organization’s new technology effort and is critical to the long term success of Covidien. Significant activities for this job include: development of long term technology strategies, assessment and creation of research and technology development efforts in this area, hiring and leading a high performance team to execute on the strategy. Additionally, the person in this position will be responsible for identifying potential research partners, initiating research projects with those partners and managing the research projects to successful completion. Technical field 1 Surgical Visualization and Imaging • Experience in visualization or detection of structures and related technology, such as Immunohistochemical reagents/dyes, white light endoscopy (SOC), auto-fluorescent endoscopy, chromo endoscopy, narrow band imaging, immunophotodiagnostic endoscopy, optical coherence tomography, confocal fluorescence/reflectance micro-endoscopy, raman point spectroscopy, light scattering spectroscopy. Experience with surgical or endoscopic application is a plus. Technical field 2 Embedded Electronic Systems • Experience in embedding sensors, motors, control circuitry, logic, telemetry and power supplies in handheld medical devices is strongly desired. Experience with surgical or endoscopic application is a plus. Electrical engineering or close match required for this position. Technical field 3 Metabolic Research • Experience with implantable devices and / or metabolic disease physiology is desired. Position will develop scientific knowledge related to the understanding the mechanism of action of surgical treatment for obesity and diabetes and apply that knowledge to develop devices and implants. Experience with surgical or endoscopic application is a plus. Scientific background, most likely with some physiology background is desired. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Manage all aspects of the research effort including: budgeting, project planning, performance reviews, communication to all levels of the organization, publications and laboratory work. 2. Create and refine global technology strategic direction in critical focus areas for the business. 3. Perform assessment of technology, IP and business landscape 4. Identify both internal and external approaches and project plans for developing the technology 5. Execute on global technology strategy by completing early stage research and proof of concept work to establish technical and business feasibility. 6. Hire and lead high performance research team. Coach, motivate and foster professional development of direct reports 7. Coordinate and manage state of art searches, patent disclosures and participate in patent portfolio decisions. Requirements: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education required/ preferred: Engineering or Scientific degree at Masters level or above. Prefer academic and / or industrial research experience. Technical fields of interest include physiology, biology, chemistry biomedical, chemical or electrical engineering Experience: 5+ years research and development experience in the Medical Device field 2+ years experience managing people and projects in research or product development Preferred Skills/ Qualifications: • Supervisory and leadership skills • Team building and personnel development • Multiple project planning (tasks, timelines and priorities) • Strategy development • Strong networking and interpersonal skills • Financial analysis and budget • Understanding of market in area of specialty • Strong written and oral communication skills Skills/ Competencies: • Ability to understand and make decisions on technology and research opportunities with others in Covidien Global R&D • Ability to present technical information to clinical and other non technical personnel effectively • Ability to manage remotely and locally multiple simultaneous research and development efforts through third party sources • Able to converse at the technology strategy level as well as at the detailed technical level Other Skills: ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE: • Report to Director, Global Research and Technology Development (North Haven, CT) • Interact regularly with R&D VP, peers, technical staff, Business Development, Sales and Marketing representatives at all levels • Interact regularly with Global R&D project teams in Connecticut, France and Massachusetts. • Interact with Legal IP on creation of confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements and collaborative research agreements. • Incumbent will manage 5-15 team members. WORKING CONDITIONS: • Based in Global R&D headquarters, North Haven, Connecticut • Travel in the US and Globally to find and work with the best collaborators • Interact with surgeons, university medical and scientific researchers and administrators • Normal office conditions plus significant time spent in operating theaters and research laboratories • Attendance at scientific and surgical conferences DISCLAIMER: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
