Occidental Fire and Casualty is a billion dollar A- Excellent rated company by A.M. Best. We are looking for an experienced Underwriter with extensive knowledge of the Louisiana Personal Property Market. The position will manage $35 million in Homeowners and Dwelling Fire premium with growth opportunity. The position will be responsible for underwriting our products as part of the Louisiana Citizens Takeout program and then new business through the independent agency system to meet the long term goals of the company. The individual will have travel responsibilities, which will require overnight stays.
Major Job Responsibilities
1. Coordinate the individual risk selection process as part of the LA Citizens Takeout program.
2. Setup procedures for the underwriting of the individual risks written through the LA Citizens Program. Including the review of inspections and cost estimators.
3. Communicate with all the agents licensed as part of the Takeout program regarding policy information and individual risk situations.
4. Make recommendations to management concerning improving the systems and procedures being used by the company to service the Takeout policies.
5. Develop positive relationships with all agents.
6. Develop new business working relationships with those agent selected to write new business outside of the Takeout program.
7. Receives and analyzes new business submissions to determine desirability of risks in accordance with established guidelines and risks characteristics.
8. Determines proper classifications, rates and exposures.
If negative underwriting characteristics develop or are a part of a risk submission, finds alternative approaches to write business profitably (deductibles, exclusions, or another program).
9. Declines totally unacceptable risks on timely basis, providing clear and concise reasons for declinations.
10. Prices accounts in accordance with filed programs and rates.
11. Coordinate and facilitate communication between agencies and all appropriate company representatives.
12. Report on market information.
13. Participate in the strategic development for both the short and long term goals for the state.
14. Make recommendations to enhance profitability and growth of the state.
Experience and Skill Requirements
1. College degree or equivalent work experience.
2. Minimum three years Personal Property underwriting experience.
3. Demonstrates strategic thinking skills.
4. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills.
5. Computer literate.
6. Must have a strong knowledge of the Louisiana Property Market.
