Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Job Description:  Perform entry-level Practical Nurse duties in the care of mentally ill, physically ill, mentally retarded or geriatric patients. Work is performed according to established rules and procedures with supervision of nursing techniques provided by Registered Nurses in charge of wards or other units.

Take temperature, pulse, and respiration and blood pressure readings. Administer and records prescribed medication. Keep clinical charts and reports on the physical and emotional state of patients. Promote and participate in rehabilitation activities. Provide unit supervision in the absence of the charge nurse. Maintain a clean and hazard-free environment on the ward. Promote patients' personal hygiene. May regulate parenteral fluids and administer intramuscular injection. Administer emergency first aid. Order supplies and equipment.

Minnesota Security Hospital is a Joint Commission accredited secure living facility and is part of the Minnesota State Operated Forensic Service which also includes the Minnesota Sex Offender Program, Transition Services, a step down program for individuals committed as Mentally Ill and Dangerous and a statewide consultative service that provides forensic evaluations.

St. Peter is an ideal rural location in the Minnesota River Valley.  A thriving town of 10,000, St. Peter is the home to Gustavus Adolphus College, a private liberal arts college. Mankato, ten miles from St. Peter, is a city of 50,000 with a state university and a major retail and business center. The twin cities metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul is only 60 miles away.

Qualifications: Graduation from an approved school of nursing plus current licensure in MN as a Practical Nurse; requires occasionally lifting of over 50 pounds; requires a Class D Driver’s License.

Benefits:  We offer a competitive base salary.   In addition, the state's contribution toward your insurance, retirement, and Medicare and Social Security benefits is 30 percent of your salary.  Not including the cost of vacation time, holidays, sick leave and other benefits.  Employees earn 11 paid holidays per year.  Health insurance is free to employees who work 3/4 time or more.  Dependent coverage is $63.00 semi-monthly.  Tuition reimbursement and a chance to earn CEU’s is available.
