Legislative Director
The North Carolina League of Municipalities is seeking an experienced professional to represent our 541 member cities and towns as chief legislative lobbyist on the full range of municipal issues in the NC General Assembly. Responsible for coordinating and supporting the legislative advocacy efforts of municipal officials, based on policies adopted by the membership; keeping municipal officials well informed about legislative issues and enhancing grassroots contacts; developing and implementing legislative strategies; testifying before legislative committees and communicating effectively with legislators, staff and media; supervising general and fiscal research on legislative issues; and supervising drafting of legislative proposals, analysis of bills and preparation of accurate and timely summaries. Work closely with other staff members to support the membership’s policy development process and provide sound advice to municipal officials on legislative matters. Also supervise work on regulatory issues and communications with state agencies on municipal issues.
Require bachelor’s degree; advanced degree such as law or master’s of public administration/policy would be a plus. Candidates should have 10 or more years of relevant government relations and public policy experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, sound ethics and professional judgment, tact, courtesy and discretion in frequent contact with public officials are essential. Prefer some supervisory experience. Require valid NC driver’s license.
Position reports to NCLM Executive Director. Salary commensurate with experience, excellent benefits, position open until filled.
