JIMAR PIFSC GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST – ID# 28229. Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. (2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position, located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds. Minimum Monthly Salary: $3,222.00. Duties: Responsible for designing and implementing Geographic Information System (GIS) methods for benthic habitat mapping studies. Incorporates bathymetry and imagery data and derivative products, such as slope, relief or topographic position index, of these data into a Geographic Information System and integrates this with optical data products to allow investigators to examine the morphological features of the seabed and characterize the area into regions representing different benthic habitats. Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in GIS, Geography, Marine Geology, Oceanography, or other relevant discipline. (A Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Marine or Physical Sciences with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in GIS, marine science, oceanography or hydrographic surveying may be substituted for a Master’s Degree.) One to three (1-3) years of experience in processing terrestrial or marine data using GIS. Basic knowledge and understanding of marine geological and/or biological processes. Knowledge of common spatial data integration methods and familiarity with multiple spatial data formats. Proficiency with ArcView 3 and ArcGIS 8. Strong interpersonal skills to work with Principal Investigators and other researchers. Proficiency with Windows operating system and word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license to transport gear and to attend meetings. Ability to write and publish papers. Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Aviation and Marine Operations. Desirable Qualifications: Previous experience in development of GIS-based tools for benthic habitat mapping is very desirable. Previous experience with the collection, processing, analysis and presentation of multibeam backscatter and sidescan imagery. Experience with other oceanographic equipment and experience at sea for extended periods of time (4 weeks or more). Experience with operating small boats. Ability to assist in development and maintenance of web sites containing mapping data. Ability to proficiently use processing and analysis software including Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), MBSystem, Fledermaus and SABER. Proficiency with Visual Basic programming in ArcGIS 8 and/or Avenue scripting. Proficiency with UNIX computers. Inquiries: Nicole Wakazuru 956-9465 (Oahu).
