(GIS Support Specialist / LAN Administrator)

$3,019 - $4,354 Monthly

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

This is a permanent, full-time position with the Oregon Department of Forestry located in Coos Bay. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified people to fill the current vacancy. Specific questions regarding the position should be addressed to Greg Kreimeyer, Assistant District Forester, in Coos Bay at (541) 267-1742.

A Bachelor Degree with an emphasis in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Science or related field; OR An Associate Degree in GIS, Computer Science or college-level coursework that includes 30 quarter (20 semester) Geography, GIS or Computer Science credits AND one year of GIS experience working with software, hardware, communications or data; OR Three years of GIS experience working with software, hardware, communications or data.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The purpose of this position is to provide coordination, planning, administration and management of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and associated data for the Coos District.  The position also functions as the Coos District Local Area Network Administrator.  Major duties include:

 

GIS Administration

·         Assesses district needs for GIS software and GIS computer systems and implements solutions within budget restrictions, policies and data systems.

·         Coordinates GIS and computer program operating systems and maintenance between field sites and Salem Computer Services to maintain overall system compatibility and operation.  Uses programming languages to automate tasks and/or build user interfaces to implement GIS computer operations.

·         Coordinates the development, updates and maintenance of the spatial and attribute data in the GIS coverages used by State Forests, Fire and the Private Forest programs in the district. 

·         Supports forest management planning by importing forest inventory and long-range plan data, preparing various compilations, checking the data and preparing tabular and graphic presentations.

·         Prepares maps for digitizing including extensive research of records.

·         Performs a full range of digital cartographic and GIS operations.

 

Local Area Network Administration

·         Serves as the Local Area Network System Administrator in the Windows 2000 server environment.  Administers, maintains and troubleshoots computer operating systems, hardware and software including peripherals.  Addresses day-to-day computer security issues.

·         Provides technical assistance and coordination for implementing and maintaining computer systems and operations including correcting simple and complex failures of hardware and software, configuring computers, diagnosing and correcting printer problems, assisting with wiring changes, changing printer configurations, adding/deleting users, maintaining tape backups, and restoring files and directories.

 

Training and Technical Assistance

·         Answers questions from users and diagnoses problems often caused by software or operator error.

·         Contacts vendors and other external entities to establish solutions.  Prioritizes problems and works with users, vendors and Salem Information Technology staff to resolve conflicts.  

 

The Department’s highest priority work is when a forest fire emergency occurs; therefore, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways.  That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem Headquarters.  It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity, either this program or elsewhere.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Most work is done indoors at a GIS or other computer workstation and digitizing or drafting tables.  Occasional travel required by auto or light plane.  Overtime and travel required in project fire situations.  Requires occasional exertion for short periods.
