POSITION SPECIFICATION

Position:      Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Level 5

 

Locaton:          West Palm Beach, FL

 

 

Position Scope & Responsibilities

The person selected for this position will be responsible for site reconnaissance, boring layout, supervision of drilling, CADD staff, and engineering technicians. He/she will also be responsible for visual examination of soil samples, and preparation of boring logs as well as being responsible for geotechnical testing and sampling. Together with senior management and through teams of professional and support personnel, he/she is expected to eventually be responsible for preparation of geotechnical exploration and recommendation reports such as high embankment slopes, design recommendations for shallow and deep foundations, and settlement evaluation of soft or compressible soils.. This position requires a person with strong technical skills.  The qualified candidate will be expected to work on multiple geotechnical exploration projects, while maintaining timelines and budgetary requirements.  He/she must be adaptable in a constantly changing environment without compromising quality, and must have the ability to establish working relationships at all levels, internally and externally.

 

Subtask Construction Observation

The responsibilities of the field staff include observation of the construction and reporting the results of these observations to South Florida Water Management District.  The field staff shall not direct the Contractor on any aspect of the work.  It will be the CMS’s responsibility to inspect and accept or reject Contractor’s work.  Construction Observation is divided into the following areas of specialty.

 

·        Civil and Geotechnical Review - The Consultant shall assist the District by establishing a civil and geotechnical review program to confirm the intended design during construction.  The activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

a.       Provide observation and review of construction activities within the Contractor’s work area including the following:

·        Clearing designated areas first

·        Maintaining existing dirt roads

·        Suitability of embankment materials to meet specified embankment design materials criteria

·        Removal of unsuitable materials during grading

·        Subgrade preparation and foundation acceptance

·        Placement and compaction of embankment material, placement of drainage blanket and chimney drain and placement of soil cement

·        Material testing for zoned-embankment construction

·        Installation of slurry wall and slurry wall records

·        Excavation of perimeter canal

·        Laboratory compaction control tests

·        Field density tests for compaction control

·        Soils and concrete testing data

·        Review soils classifications relative to appropriate proctor values

·        Review Certifications and calibrations of field and lab equipment

·        Review and analyze field data on embankment instrumentation as required

·        Daily testing reports

 

b.      Review of material, placement and compaction adjacent to embankment structures and in locations where embankment crosses existing canals.

c.       Review and analyze field data on piezometer cluster installation.

d.      Review and analyze leak detection system installation.

 

Position Qualifications & Experience

The candidate hired for this position will be an Licensed Professional Engineer.  He/she must possess a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He/she must enjoy working collaboratively with clients, engineers, architects, support personnel, and regulatory agencies.  Strong communication and organizational skills required. The candidate must have dam, levee, reservoir and foundation experience (familiar with caprock south of Lake Okeechobee)

 

Education/Registration Requirement

Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (MS Degree Preferred)

Candidate should have 8-12 years experience in this field

FL Licensed Professional Engineer Preferred
