PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Fuel & Sales Tax Accountant has the responsibility to complete the motor fuel and sales tax accounting activities for the organization. This includes setting up and retaining the company’s tax records, filing tax returns on a timely basis, reconciling the tax accrual balance sheet accounts, and preparing related reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Extract and manipulate fuel delivery data. Prepare motor fuel tax returns and claims for refund returns. Make timely payments.
2. Reconcile fuel delivery data against the general ledger. Research differences and communicate to the AP supervisor for correction.
3. Respond to federal and state agency requests for supplemental sales tax and motor fuel tax data. Research discrepancies.
4. Monitor sales tax and motor fuel tax rates and applicable law changes. Update PDI and ZyTax with motor fuel tax rate changes. Communicate with IT personnel to update POS with sale tax rate changes.
5. Extract sales and use tax data from system. Calculate sales and use tax due and prepare returns. Make timely tax deposits and tax payments.
6. Reconcile sales tax accounts. Make adjusting journal entries as necessary.
EDUCATION: BA in Accounting is required. Minimum 1-2 yrs Accounting Experience in a related role required.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS or ABILITIES: Ability to research via the internet. Ability to understand and interpret various tax laws. Detailed-oriented. Ability to multi task, work in an ever changing environment, meet deadlines, and work in a high paced environment. Effective written and verbal communication. Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Access.
DECISION MAKING: Typical decisions include ability to make educated decisions relating to motor fuel and sales tax disputes. Ability to interpret and ensure compliance with motor fuel and sales tax laws of various government agencies.
