Gevo, Inc. is a high energy, team-oriented organization that is pioneering the advanced biofuels industry.  We are looking for a Fermentation Engineer, based in Denver, Colorado.  This role will closely interact with the metabolic engineering teams and the pilot & commercial plant team to test and develop effective biocatalysts for the production of biofuels.  This position will work with the metabolic engineering group to quantitatively characterize new strains, and develop strains to meet biocatalyst performance targets.


Requirements include:

·      Requires a B.S. or M.S. degree in chemical, biochemical, biochemistry or a related discipline and a minimum of 1-2 years of professional (not academic) experience solving industrial problems.

·      Experience in collecting and analyzing data from laboratory operations (including carbon and other mass balances) to provide direction for optimal strain and process development.

·      Broad technical knowledge in the area of microbial fermentation and microbiology.

·      Specialized knowledge includes microbial physiology, fermentation principles and operation, basic PC skills, culture maintenance, aseptic techniques

·      Excellent communication and good interpersonal/teamwork skills are desired.

·      Statistical experimental design, literature search capabilities

·       Proven self-starter- must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.


Responsibilities include:

·       Design, specify, and install laboratory fermentation equipment for strain characterization, strain improvement and early-stage process optimization.

·       Set up, execute and document fermentation experiments. Work with peers and management to define pertinent experiments, develop protocols, collect and analyze resultant data within agreed time lines.

·       Collect, process and organize data, and report results.

·       Work with analytical chemist to identify and develop analytical protocols: reviews data for anomalies that may affect results; ensure that analytical information is valid and useful.

·       Utilize experience and observations to capture knowledge from experiments, and communicate the knowledge with colleagues.

·       Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of lab instrumentation.

·       Conduct troubleshooting experiments, assist with training new employees, orders and audit supplies for the fermentation laboratory

·       Study alternative media sources, pre-treatment scheme, and/or bioreactor designs as currently envisioned.  Works with peers and management to explore the process flow options in the laboratory by designing appropriate experiments and collecting and analyzing resultant data.
