EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SEARCH

A newly formed local education fund in Hartford, Connecticut seeks a dynamic individual to lead the organization as its first Executive Director. The successful applicant will be a seasoned professional, with excellent leadership, fundraising and civic engagement skills. She or he will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the organization and will be highly visible in the community. Ultimately, the Executive Director will lead an organization that builds community responsibility for public education, so that all students succeed in learning and in life.

Working closely with a newly created Board of Directors, representing key local leaders, supporters and stakeholders in Hartford’s public education system, the Executive Director will be accountable for all strategic and operational components of running the organization. Additionally, the Executive Director will oversee the development and implementation of strategic initiatives that will support successful school reform in Hartford.

The Executive Director will have a wide variety of relationships at multiple levels with diverse constituencies. He or she will be an involved leader, who earns the trust and confidence of several stakeholder groups in Hartford, including business leaders, parents, community organizations, and colleges and universities.

Position Summary:
The Executive Director has the overall responsibility for carrying out the objectives, activities and programs established by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director should possess dynamic leadership skills to manage staff as well as superior communication skills and strong organizational and administrative abilities. He or she must be able to represent the organization effectively in its public relations, and with other external constituencies. A familiarity with the challenges of urban public school systems is essential, as is knowledge of education policy and public policy issues and a demonstrated commitment to education reform.

Position Responsibilities:
•    Focus on Results. Ensures that all activities deliver results for students and   improved outcomes.

•    Program, Product and Service Delivery. Oversees design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of programs, products and services.     

•    Board Administration and Support. Supports operations and administration of the Board by advising and informing Board members, and interfacing between Board and staff.

 

•    Financial, Tax, Risk and Facilities Management. Recommends yearly budget for Board approval and prudently manages organization’s resources within the budget guidelines, according to current laws and regulations.

•    Human Resource Management. Effectively manages the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations.

•    Community and Public Relations. Serves as chief spokesperson for the organization (along with the Board chair) and assures that the organization and its mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive way to relevant stakeholders.

•    Fundraising. Oversees fundraising planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements and research funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals and administering fundraising records and documentation.

Qualifications:
•    Strong analytical and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written skills in preparing proposals, speeches and presentations, and writing position papers.

•    In-depth experience in education or human development.

•    Experience working in an urban education environment.

•    Ability to organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple work activities in a fast-paced team environment, to meet critical deadlines and ensure high quality work products.

•    Experience in program or project management in the education and/or human development fields.

•    Experience in funds development and fundraising.

•    Experience and demonstrated knowledge in public policy development.

•    MS Office products proficiency required. Knowledge of database programs.

Additional Qualifications:
•    Master’s Degree (or comparable experience) in education, business or related field.

•    Five to seven years experience in non-profit management.

•    High ethical standards.
